Thiago Motta appointed new Bologna head coach

Bologna are set to appoint the former Barcelona midfielder Thiago Motta as their new head coach.

Motta, 40, will replace Sinisa Mihajlovic at Stadio Renato Dall’Ara, the club’s CEO Claudio Fenucci said on Saturday.

A former Italy international, Motta played 96 times for Barcelona between 2001 and 2007 and was most recently in charge of Serie A club Spezia.

“The coach of the first team will be Thiago Motta from Monday,” Fenucci told reporters, as per Reuters. “We are finalising details but it can be considered official. Now it is important to think about tomorrow’s game.”

Motta guided Spezia to a 16th-place finish in Serie A last season, helping the club to preserve their top-flight status.

His Spezia side won 36 points from 38 matches ahead of his departure in June.

He joins a Bologna team who have made a disappointing start to the new campaign.

Under Mihajlovic Bologna are yet to win in the league this season, drawing three and losing two of their opening five games.

They finished 13th in Serie A in 2021-22 and boast a squad including Roberto Soriano, Gary Medel and Marko Arnautovic, who has already scored five league goals this season.
