0SHARESShareTweetBarbara Sellers Obituary, Death – On October 24, 2023, Sister Barbara Sellers, 84, a Sister of Charity of Leavenworth (SCL) for 66 years, passed away. Sister Marion Clare assumed the name Sister on August 20, 1957, upon receiving her habit. She commenced her religious life on that date. Subsequently, she resumed using her baptismal name. Sister Barbara was born in Topeka, Kansas, on January 25, 1939. Among the six offspring of Frank and Clara “Kay” (née Linenberger) Sellers, she was the third. Sister’s religious devotion was strengthened by her grandparents and shaped by the example set by her mother. Her grandmother was a staunch advocate for her religious conversion when she made the decision to pursue it. Sister Barbara had a delightfully soft chuckle when she found something humorous despite her reserved nature. She devoted herself entirely to the SCL Community and to God.
Sister Barbara received her education at Hayden High from the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth. After completing her undergraduate studies, she was motivated to apply for the SCL novitiate by the Sisters’ affection and enthusiasm for learning. During the initial five years of her ministry, Sister Barbara taught in elementary schools while pursing her education. She subsequently graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Kansas with degrees. As a revered professor and administrator at Saint Mary College (now University of Saint Mary), Sister Barbara is fondly recalled by many. In addition, she instructed Latin at the University of Kansas from 1968 to 1969. Sister Barbara held numerous positions during her time at Saint Mary, including associate dean, registrar, scheduler, classical scholar, and member of the Language and Literature faculty. Additionally, she oversaw the freshman orientation and seminar and served as coordinator. She organized and instructed peer academic counselors in order to prepare seniors to serve as mentors for freshmen. In order to immerse herself in the ancient cultures, she led student groups to Greece and Rome and instructed them in Latin and medieval history. She made time for each of her pupils, whether it was to assist them in mastering mythology or to instruct them in writing. She started working in the SCL Archives in 2001 and was promoted to chief archivist in 2004.
The preceding Sister Barbara was survived by her parents, sisters Margaret “Cookie” Piercy and Kay Sellers, and siblings Frank, Scott, and Eric. In addition to the SCL Community, survivors include sisters-in-law Karen Sellers and Norma Sellers, nieces, and nephews. On November 2 and November 3, 2023, only Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth and intimate family members will be in attendance at the vigil and funeral. The site of interment will be the Mother House grounds at Mount Olivet Cemetery.
